High-Speed (Broadband) Internet

Some advantages of High-Speed Broadband Internet include:

  • Always-on connection to the internet - no waiting for your modem to dial-up every time you want to view a website or check your e-mail.

  • If you have a secondary phone line for your dial-up modem, you can have your 2nd line disconnected and save the monthly fee of the 2nd line - often making the switch to Broadband cheaper than keeping dial-up internet.
  • Download speeds from 256 Kbps to 3000 Kbps and higher are available (5 - 60 X faster than dial-up internet).
  • Simultaneously share you internet access, printers and files with multiple computers in your home with home networking options. There is no need to run wires all over your residence or business to do this - we can set up a wireless home network for you. If you have a laptop computer, imagine being able to access the internet and your e-mail from the comfort of your back yard or sofa.

Computer Techs can install Broadband Internet, usually at less than 1/2 the cost of installation provided by some Broadband Internet Service Providers. Broadband Internet is available in 3 different ways... DSL, Cable and Wireless:

  • DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) comes through your phone lines, but is on different frequencies so that you can be connected to the internet and make and receive telephone calls on the same phone line at the same time. DSL service is provided by SBC and other local resellers.

  • Cable Broadband comes through television-type coax cable, and is provided locally by Charter Communications.

  • Wireless Broadband is generally more expensive than DSL and Cable, but in rural areas wireless is often your only option. One local provider is Hot Spot Broadband. Hot Spot Broadband requires professional installation of an outdoor antenna, and requires a line-of-sight path to the nearest transmission tower.

Clearwire is a new wireless broadband internet service that launched in limited areas of Reno/Carson area beginning in August 2005, and is expected to offer widespread service throughout the area by early 2006. Unlike other wireless broadband services, Clearwire's service does not require an outdoor, line-of-sight antenna in most cases. Their service provides mobility utilizing a small modem and antenna together in one device (about the size of a book) and placed near a window. The modem communicates with a local cell site - usually no more than 1 - 2 miles away. This service is attractive to mobile professionals who will be able to move around to different areas of the city and have internet download speeds of up to 1500 Kbps. More Clearwire info.
  • Nationwide wireless broadband service is available via satellite from companies such as Direcway, Starband and WildBlue.
